EXCERPTS FROM TT

Personal Benefits of practicing Surya Namaskar A: Why I Practice.

As I stand in Tadasana I feel taller.  Maybe I actually am taller as I compensate for weaknesses in posture that creep in when I am not paying attention.  I've noticed there are times when I'm not doing formal yoga, like when I am walking the dogs, that I become aware of posture and strive to be more Tadasana-like.  I've even noticed that my cycling posture is changing; straighter back, bending forward more from the hips than from rounding my spine.  Uttanasana releases my spine to lengthen, stretches my very tight hamstrings, and relaxes my neck.  I can feel the blood flowing into my head. My sinuses swell and I experience a minor discomfort, which is more that offset by the release of the swelling when I am once again upright. Ardha Uttanasana continues the good stretch begun in Uttanasana.  Plank and Chaturanga Dandasana challenge and strengthen my relatively weak upper body.  Urdhva Mukha Svanasana brings my heart forward and open giving a nice stretch to the front of my body.  My attitude seems to be mirrored in this heart opening.  My spine is strengthened and massaged.  Adho Mukha Svanasana brings me into a place of recovery, reconnecting with breath and calming the mind. Hamstrings continue their much needed stretch.  The cervical spine gets to relax and expand.

Yoga Sutra 1.2 - yogah cittavrtti nirodhah
'yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind'

"I have lived Sutra 1.2 very few times in my life, but I often find these moments when driving alone with the radio off. My mind will become so turbulent with the day's events, work to be done, and events yet to happen. Suddenly I will go blank. And then I notice the natural world. Driving to work on Thursday I was running late and thinking about grades. I took a breath and focused, only to notice the shape of the snow flakes on the window. My mind was quiet."

on "Your Experience of the Pose"
"Everytime I find new layers of awareness in asanas it fills me with joy.
When I really found length and extension in Warrior 3,
it was a mighty fine momment."
